Shanghai is at the centre of the Yangtze River Delta region, a triangular territory of over 100,000 square kilometres that includes the northern Jiangsu province and southern Zhejiang province. Comprising Shanghai and 15 other highly dynamic cities, the region is an important economic engine of the People's Republic of China. It produces over one-fifth of the country's GDP in less than 1% of its total land area.
