From 4-6 November, the Urban Age Istanbul Conference gathered over 400 people together to explore the vast and complex challenge of contemporary city making and the interconnected issues of the impact of the global economic condition on world cities, the effect of climate change on urban sustainability and the role of urban design in creating socially cohesive environments. Over 100 innovators of urban change from 15 countries, half a dozen mayors, renowned scholars and authors side-by-side with architects and developers leading major urban regeneration projects around the globe offered presentations about urban transformations and policies, urban pasts and futures. Deutsche Bank Chairman Josef Ackermann and LSE Director Howard Davies announced the creation of LSE Cities, an international centre for urban excellence, with an endowment of £1 million from Deutsche Bank each year over a period of five years. Architect Richard Rogers joined to celebrate this new initiative aimed at improving the lives of people in cities across the world. LSE Cities, to be located in the Department of Sociology, will start on 1 January 2010 and will be directed by Ricky Burdett, LSE Professor in Architecture and Urbanism. Read more...
The third Deutsche Bank Urban Age Award went to Barış İcin Müzik (Music for Peace), an urban intervention in the form of a community music project located in Edirnekapi, one of Istanbul’s most disadvantaged inner-city neighbourhoods.
